Skins Sign Favre, Edge Lands In Denver…

……Don’t worry, I’m just kidding sports fans. But wouldn’t these two headlines be absolutely hilarious and certainly fitting?! The Skins, in the midst of their own quarterback conundrum and Denver….oh Denver….who has inexplicably filled its entire roster with Running Backs leading into the 2009 season. Why not, what’s one more RB right? If anything, at this point the Ponies (Broncos) have enough running backs to backfill all of their other positions on the football field! Nice work Josh McDaniels, way to completely destroy your salary cap with bums in the backfield, minus Knowshon “Mr. Georgia” Moreno who has yet to step onto the gridiron. I can’t wait to watch the Broncos run their organization into the ground, literally. You might as well stand all their Running Backs up in a shooting line, it’s going to be that type of year at Mile High.

As for the Washington Snyders (yes, Dan Snyder, their pompous owner), they’ve been so worried about trying to replace Jason Campbell during the offseason and in the 2009 NFL Draft that all they’ve actually done is piss him off. Though this might give him so motivation in the short term, it doesn’t exactly build internal relations or chemistry. Don’t be surprised if halfway through the year Snyder ends up on Favre’s doorstep begging him to once again break out of retirement…anything can happen right? In Dan Snyder’s world it can….which is normally a bad thing for the Washington Redskins.

The Good, The Bad, and The Downright Ugly…

The 2009 NFL Draft was this past weekend and oh was it entertaining. Typical teams struggled to make smart decisions, the usual teams were solid, and there were many trades and pick moves put into place to make the ’09 draft one of the most memorable in recent history.

Read below for a little analysis and my awards for best and worst draft choices…

THE VERY GOOD

1. The Philadelphia Eagles

Well Deshean Jackson, your Eagles got a stud WR gift-wrapped to play alongside you in Philly. The fact that Jeremy Maclin fell to Philly here was ridiculous and never should have happened (all Al Davis’ fault in Oakland). And Donovan McNabb, are you satisfied with your weapons now? O, and in case you didn’t notice, Westbrook’s new backup and future successor LeShean McCoy out of Pitt is completely legit. I saw him beat up on Navy in Annapolis this past fall all by himself. Not many people know him, but they will very soon when he takes over for an aging Westbrook. Great pickup Philly…

2. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts, how I hate you so. You efficiently filled your running back whole and got a speedy, athletic, and very talented Donald Brown out of UConn. This was a steal and excited what the Colts needed after giving up Dominic Rhodes in the offseason. We all know Addai can’t stay healthy and when he actually does play, he’s not that efficient behind Manning, Wayne, and company. They’re pass happy and will look a lot to Brown out of the backfield. Later in the draft, the Colts also boosted both sides of their line and added depth. A solid draft all the way around for the ‘Shoe.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

As a Jags fan, I was ecstatic to watch Jack Del Rio and company go to work in Jax’s war room. Not only did they get two big Offensive Linemen that will surely keep Mojo Drew alive longer, they added three sure-handed blazing fast wide receivers. Though most haven’t heard of them, don’t be suprised if Garrard throws the ball much more successfully next year without dealing with thugs who had no hands like he’s been used to over the past couple of seasons. Many questioned their pass on Michael Crabtree, but if this organization is going to be centered around MoJo, shouldn’t you do the best to protect him?

4. Arizona Cardinals

Well, Edge is out Mr. Meaty Beanie Wells is in. With a huge hole to fill in the backfield behind Kurt Warner, the Cards got their man of their future to bruise defenses and push the line in the redzone. Though many figured that ‘Zona would trade away Anquan Boldin on draft day, the Cardinals made a bigger offensive statement by providing solidity to their run game and NOT trading Boldin. The Bears and others offered, but none matched Arizona’s trade expectations. Overall, the draft was a success for Ken Wisenhunt’s bunch. Keep Boldin, pick up a few strong pass rushers, and add a bruiser for your franchise running back.

THE VERY BAD

1. Dallas Cowboys

Did these guys even participate in this year’s draft? Oh yea, they passed in Round 1 and added 12 special teamers on Day 2? Come on Jerry Jones, you know better. You might as well have traded those guys or picks for help in next year’s draft. Not one person is recognizable from your draft and you added no help to help your now T.O.-less receiver core (that features an overrated Roy Williams) in the early rounds. What a waste…good luck scoring points this year…

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

You got your man in Josh Freeman and then what? You completely disappeared from the draft.

THE DOWNRIGHT UGLY

1. The Oakland Raiders

The most shocking yet stupid pick in the 2009 NFL Draft officially belongs to your Al Davis. Heyward-Bay before Crabtree and Maclin? Are you kidding me?!? What the *&^%*^*?!?!?!?!? No wonder your organization’s been in the toilet for years now, YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS! Jamarcus Russell now weighs like 350+ lbs. and was just given a speedy WR with no hands and no proven ability to be able to break away and play one-on-one. Looks like D-Mac Darren McFadden will see a lot of touches this year….otherwise, they have NO shot to win games. They’re lucky their division is downright awful. Welcome to the bottom of the Toilet Bowl Oakland…

2. The Denver Broncos

Another RB?!?!? Josh McDaniels, you’re killing me. First you get rid of a franchise quarterback for who? Oh yea, that bum from the windy city Kyle Orton (with draft picks). Next, with like 39 running backs already on your roster and 3 more picked up in the 2009 Free Agency period, you draft Knowshown Moreno? I mean, I know the Georgia boy can play but come on now, don’t you think you should work on improving quite possibly the worst defense in the NFL? Your secondary is terrible and aging and you guys rarely sack the quarterback. Even better, there were a few quality RBs you could have taken later in the draft. This pick definitely should have gone elsewhere. As we know it, McDaniels continues to dig his own grave deeper and deeper after every decision he makes…poor guy…he’ll be out in the streets in no time…

Mike Vick Back On The Field?…

ALBANY, N.Y. – Michael Vick has a place on a minor-league indoor football team if he can get reinstated by the NFL.

The Albany Firebirds, an arenafootball2 franchise, have offered the 28-year-old quarterback from Newport News a one-year contract at the league standard: $200 a week plus a $50 bonus for a win.

Vick quarterbacked the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons before being convicted of bankrolling an interstate dogfighting business.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not said if he will lift Vick’s suspension after he completes a 23-month prison sentence. Vick goes from federal prison to home confinement next month.

The Firebirds’ contract offer requires that Vick donate $100,000 to a local humane society.

Skins Saved With Hesitation…

Reports came out yesterday that the Redskins, during this past weekend’s 2009 NFL Draft, were slow to the punch in making a move up the 4th or 5th spot to get overrated quarterback Mark Sanchez. To Skins fans, you guys better be glad you did. .Sanchez will be a bust and you know, all of you, that Dan Snyder, slick and slimey Snyder, would’ve given up an arm, leg, and well…the whole army to get him and get rid of his previous investment Jason Campbell. Fortunately for Washington’s organization and future, the New York Jets traded away picks and backup players to steal Sanchez from the Browns at the 5th overall pick (though there weren’t many signs saying that Cleveland wanted or even worked out “Dirty Sanchez”).

Now, I’m not saying that Campbell or backup Colt Brennan will have better careers than Sanchez. To be honest, I don’t think many people will remember any of the 3 of them 10-15 years from now. But I disagree with Snyder’s ploy at giving up everything, as well as your team’s future, to get somebody who’s unproven and out of a system where EVERYONE is a winner. USC simply breeds NFL-ready starts at the WR, RB, OL,…well at every position and the job of quarterback might be the easiest on the team, especially in a weak Pac-10 Football Conference. Sanchez should win that many games and should be successful. For goodness sakes, he’s on the best team (on paper) and in the best overall football system under a great coach in the entire country. Winning behind center is so easy a caveman could do it…

What do you have to deal with now Skins fans? Well, your quarterback hates your front office, he’s not really that good, and you have the Pineapple Express Colt Brennan riding the pine….what doesn’t seem right about this?

Beanie Has The “Edge” In ‘Zona…

Yesterday (and expectedly), the reigning NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals released previous Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin “The Edge” James. We all saw this coming and it’s been long overdue. Yes, “Edge” had a good run in the playoffs last year and early in his career he was a solid force in the backfield, but he simply just doesn’t hack it anymore. He’s older, his legs are slow, and he struggles to break tackles. However, the release was imminent after watching the ‘Cards draft Chris “Beanie” Wells out of Ohio State University this past weekend with their first round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Clearly, Arizona’s front office had a future vision of a bruising downhill runner (some call it overweight) that can provide some tough yards in between Warner-Fitzgerald bombs 50 yards downfield. Beanie is the future of the Cardinals’ backfield and the organization solidified that yesterday. To Edge, you’ve had a great career, but it’s time you start thinking about hangin’ up the ‘ole spikes….

Bears Didn’t Give Enough…

“General manager Jerry Angelo of the Chicago Bears tried to trade his second-round draft pick for Anquan Boldin, and when that didn’t work out, he traded the Bears right out of the first day of the draft. The Bears were hoping Ohio State wide receiver Brian Robiskie would slip to them, and when he didn’t come close to making it to No. 49, they explored options to get out of the pick and found a willing trade partner in Seattle. That sets up Angelo and the Bears with nine draft picks today in the final five rounds, including the fourth pick of the day, 68th overall, acquired from the Seahawks.”
